KUALA SELANGOR Overlooking the coastal town of Kuala Selangor, Bukit Melawati is a small hill where the remnants of the 200-year old Fort Altingsburg is found.
The adjacent Nature Park, covering 240 hectares, is a haven for bird watchers. Some 130 species of birds, including the rare spoon-billed Sandpiper and Nordmann's Greenshank, have been identified.
A few kilometres from the town, Kampung Kuantan offers a spectacular sight of fireflies flickering away at the mangrove along the Selangor River.
NATIONAL ZOO 13km from the city centre of Kuala Lumpur, the National Zoo houses a fascinating collection of animals from all over the world, as well as an impressive aquarium and aviary.
BATU CAVES 13km north of Kuala Lumpur, the magnificent Batu Caves has been popular among local and foreign tourists.
Of the 3 caves there, the largest and most famous is the Temple Cave, so-named because it houses a Hindu shrine. During the Thaipusam Festival, Hindu devotees carry the 'kavadis' up the steps to the cave.
A little below the Temple Cave is the Dark Cave, which is a 2-km network of relatively untouched caverns.
The third cave, at the foot of the steps, houses an interesting display of Hindu statues and wall paintings.
