BACKGROUND Sandwiched between Kedah and Thailand at the northwestern tip of Peninsular Malaysia, Perlis is the smallest state in the country with an area of 810 sq km and a population of 217,480.
Despite its size, Perlis is a land of serene beauty with green paddy fields and rolling hills.
HISTORY Perlis was once a part of Kedah which the Siamese conquered in 1821. The Anglo-Siamese Treaty in 1909 saw the cession of the state's sovereignthy by the Siamese to the British.
Perlis came under British rule until the Japanese occupation in 1942.
GETTING THERE Kangar is 140 km from Penang and 510 km from Kuala Lumpur.
Tourists can arrive by train to the state capital Kangar. The nearest airport is in Alor Setar which is 45-minute drive away.
Tourists can also take a ferry from Kuah on Pulau Langkawi to Kuala Perlis.
